Position Description
Seeking a Fisheries Biologist to work within the Mississippi Laboratories Harvesting Systems and Engineering Branch under the Harvesting Unit and shall be remotely located at the NOAA Fisheries, Southeast Fisheries Science Center, Beaufort Laboratory in Beaufort, North Carolina. The task includes the following:

  • Perform as project coordinator and field coordinator during Harvesting Unit research activities and participate as a field research data collector as required.
  • Perform entry and editing of research data and develop databases for archiving research data.
  • Conduct data analysis and summaries; provide data reports, publications and presentations.
  • Outreach and Education: Organize and conduct workshops and training sessions for commercial fishers in the proper use of federally required fishing gear. This work may be conducted through planned workshops, attendance at industry meetings and dockside visits. International outreach and training trips may be conducted
  • Provide support as a TED gear expert during TED verification and outreach visits to foreign countries. Trips will be conducted with NOAA and Department of State (DOS) staff.
  • Prepare for and present, facilitate, or participate in various position related workshops, scientific meetings, symposiums, and public forums. Events consist of but are not limited to the NOAA Fisheries Bycatch Reduction Engineering meetings; International Sea Turtle Symposium and ICES/FAO Fishing Technology meetings.
  • Provide intermittent field support to Beaufort Laboratory's projects and programs. Perform tasks which include but are not limited to gear technology assistance, data collection and small boat operation. Beaufort Laboratory support shall not be a primary function under this PWS and shall be secondary to objectives in support of the Harvesting Systems Unit for Mississippi Laboratories. All tasks performed in support of Beaufort Laboratory must be pre-approved by the COR with concurrence of the Task Order Manager.
  • Coordinate the South Atlantic Deepwater Longline Survey, including coordination with South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC), Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council (MAFMC), Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC), and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) personnel, contract coordination with SCDNR and contracted fishers, coordination with Southeast Regional Office (SERO) and SCDNR to obtain sampling permits, coordinating NMFS scientific observer involvement, and day-to-day project management.
  • Gear technology assistance, data collection and small boat operation (predominantly in support of the NMFS-Beaufort Protected Species branch).


Requirements

  • Knowledge of commercial fishing gear used in the Southeast Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico including, trawls, gillnets, seines, and longlines.
  • Knowledge of applying basic concepts, principles and methodologies of fish or related biological field sufficient to independently perform scientific tasks using standard methods and techniques.
  • Proficient in the use of fish, invertebrate, and protected species identification books and keys.
  • Computer literate and experienced with common word processing, database, statistical, and graphics programs.
  • Documented experience with statistical or quantitative analysis of data, data management, and fisheries environmental sampling technology.
  • Capable of writing reports at college level and making oral presentations.
  • Experience as lead data collector for field projects.
  • Comply with NOAA Small Boat Operating Procedures
  • Have a driver's license to operate a government vehicle.
  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident who has lived in the United States at least 3 out of the last 5 years and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to access applicable government facilities and systems.


Education
PhD Degree in Biology or related science or MS Degree in Biology or related science and 5 years' experience in fish biology, marine biology, oceanography, ecology, or related fields.

Work Location
Work will be based on-site at NOAA Fisheries, Southeast Fisheries Science Center, Beaufort Laboratory in Beaufort, North Carolina.

Compensation
The salary range for this role is $46,000 - 221,000/year. This range is a good faith estimate based on similar roles across the organization. ERT considers several factors when extending an offer of employment, including the location, scope, and associated responsibilities of the specific position, as well as a candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills.
